Firearm Safety & Skill Development

NRA Pistol Safety

If you have little or no handgun shooting experience, this is the course for you! GMM Defense has had complete novices start the class expressing concern, even fear of the pistol. By the end of the course, they were safely and confidently handling the pistol, hitting the target, and… actually having fun shooting! That’s a long way to go in eight hours. Appropriate pistols are revolvers or semi-automatic pistols in .22 or larger. Guy recommends that you bring the pistol you will rely on.  Lighter recoiling pistols are better for learning pistol skills.

The NRA Basic Pistol Class teaches the fundamental knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.  Class is appropriate for those 12-years of age and older when accompanied by a Guardian.

With at least 8-hours of course work including both classroom and range time, Students will learn to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students are instructed on NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and course completion certificate.

Pistol Combatives

For students who have already passed the Concealed Carry and Practical Pistol Handling course. We will review the basics then spend time working on Close Quarter Battle drills, rapid reloads, engaging multiple targets, shooting from a variety of positions and shooting to longer ranges.

Think of this as a martial arts course, with the weapon of choice being a handgun. This is not target shooting, this is fighting, with a gun. The course will examine several important gunfights, and draw lessons from them. Shooting will be at realistic, human-type targets.
